Margarete Schuler-Harms studied law in Freiburg im Breisgau. In Baden-Württemberg, she also took the second state examination. From 1986 until 1989, she was legal adviser of the instution for cable communication (a predecessor of the instution for media in Berlin-Brandenburg). She was awarded a doctorate at the faculty of law of the University of Hamburg in 1995, where she also qualified as a professor in 2004. After being interim professor at the University of Hamburg, the Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main and the Helmut-Schmidt-University/University of the Federal Armed Forces, she was appointed to the professorship for public law, especially public commercial law and environmental law at Helmut-Schmidt-University in 2006. In 2015/2016, she served as dean of the faculty for economics and social sciences. She has been vice president for research at the university since 01/01/2022.
