Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Mantwill has been head of the Professorship of Machine Elements and Computer Aided Product Design (MRP) at Helmut Schmidt University (HSU) in Hamburg since 2004. He studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen and received his doctorate in 1992 from TUHH in the field of computer aided design and knowledge based information systems. From 1992 to 2003, Frank Mantwill held leading positions in the field of product and process design in both development and production in industry. Most recently, he was in charge of production planning for car bodies at a German automotive manufacturer in the premium segment.
Since 2010, Prof. Mantwill has chaired the VDI GPP FB7 advisory board Product Development and Mechatronics and is involved in several technical committees. A relevant part is the technical committee 701, which revises the standard VDI2221, design of technical products and systems – model of product design. He is a representative from the field of science in the presidium of the DWT, a member of the WiGeP (Scientific Society for Product Development) as well as the Design Society. Furthermore, Professor Mantwill is on the advisory board of the congress digital factory and the VDI conference DES=ING.
