Orientation and focus of the AI Institute HSU-AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an economic, scientific and social opportunity and challenge at the same time. At HSU (Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg), we understand AI as a problem-solving methodology to increase the degree of autonomy of systems, to support actors in processes and decisions that previously required human intelligence, to realize personalized solutions, to quantitatively model mental processes, and as a data-based method to optimize structures and procedures. In doing so, we are aware of the sometimes different understandings and approaches to the design and use of AI in different disciplines and promote inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation. In addition to methodological questions, the HSU sees an enormous need for research on the responsible use of AI, e.g. with regard to social implications, transparency, regulation or participation.

To promote AI research, the HSU-AI – Institute for Artificial Intelligence was founded on January 1, 2024. The task of this scientific institution is to raise the profile of the HSU in the field of AI.

Vision

The HSU-AI Institute is a recognized player in interdisciplinary AI research. We stand for a combination of basics, applications and critical reflection.

Within the Bundeswehr, the HSU is a central research partner for the topic of AI. The HSU promotes dual-use focused research, combining research with critical reflection on societal impacts. Similarly, we work with other partners in the public sector and business.

Mission

The HSU-AI connects the AI activities of the HSU under one cross-faculty umbrella and contact to the outside world. We promote the networking of internal and external experts and users. This is done through communication work, workshops, joint research projects and 3rd mission activities.

The HSU has an HPC data center that is suitable for AI and simulations and meets the state-of-the-art and computing requirements.
