The compass of management research and its application on emotions in organizations

Barbara Sieben (2007a) developed the compass of management research to analyse the ambivalent alliances of management and emotions. Using the example of the management fashion „Emotional Intelligence“ Sieben highlights with a multiparadigmatic inquiry the untenability of popular claims and analyses the manifold power effects of studying and managing emotions. In a conceptual analysis, Sieben (2007b) shows that the compass can serve as an orientation in a field of research like the one on emotions and virtual work; and she points out, how fruitful critical management perspectives enrich the discourse. Similarly, Barbara Sieben and Åsa Wettergren (2010) use the compass to trace out their research agenda in the edited volume „Emotionalizing organizations and organizing emotions“.
