From the Oder to the Pacific, from the Arctic Ocean to the Orient – many apocalyptic horsemen have travelled through our research area. It is a gigantic space in which we search for traces of the past. Our research is characterised by the micro-historical perspectives of everyday, colonial, environmental, technological and political history, and our teaching attempts to explain the foreign and different aspects of Eastern European history.
We teach the subject “History of Eastern Europe and East-Central Europe” in its entire historical breadth, but our focus is on the history of the Tsarist Empire, the Soviet Union, Poland and Ukraine since the 18th century. Biographical and life-world approaches are sometimes the guiding star of our research, which is not limited to Eastern Europe, but always enquires into transnational networks.
