Crash

Due to an increasing importance of passive (or secondary) safety, crash simulation has taken a essential place in vehicle development in recent years. As part of this calculation method, the behavior of a vehicle and the risk of injury to vehicle occupants are predicted with the help of computer simulations. Due to the large number of tests (prescribed by law or from consumer organisations) and additional tests voluntarily carried out by the automotive OEMs, the use of appropriate simulations means that costs and time can be saved by replacing corresponding tests with computer calculations. The prediction accuracy of such simulations increases, so that more and more effects are taken into account in the context of crash simulation.

In the research field of crash simulations, individual aspects for improving simulations are examined. Further aspects in this research field are the identification of parameters for materials and establishing crash component models. Component and material test rigs are available for this purposes.
