Necessary conditions in HRM

HRM activities can be either sufficient or necessary for specific individual or organisational outcomes. Compared to a sufficient condition, a necessary condition is a critical factor, a bottleneck or a possible barrier to achieve an outcome. The idea of necessary conditions can be found in many theories of HRM, but has not been tested empirically. This is due in particular to the fact that common regression based methods are not able to identify necessary conditions. Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) (Dul 2016) is an approach and methodlogy to adress this issue. The aim of our research activities is to examine the possibilities of NCA in the field of HRM.
