Description
The master’s program in Renewable Energy and Smart Grids emphasizes the technical aspects of the electrical energy supply. In addition to the public energy supply, electrical systems are also an important field of application.
One of the most important current and future tasks of technology is the transition to a sustainable energy supply with renewable energies. Their use conserves fuel resources, improves environmental protection and minimizes impact on the climate. The Master’s Program Renewable Energy and Intelligent Networks teaches the necessary skills. First, the conventional and renewable energy converters will be treated in the modules Fundamentals of Electrical Machines and Drives, Power Electronics and Electrical Power Supply. The energy supply system must be adapted to the weather-dependent fluctuating energy conversion from wind and photovoltaic power plants. There are problems due to forecast inaccuracies, steep increases in performance, times of low energy supply and periods of excess electrical energy. Possible solutions include the expansion of the electrical network, energy storage, the flexible generation of energy and the control of consumption. For optimum coordination of these possibilities, the electrical load flow must be controlled according to changed rules. For this purpose, the electrical networks are equipped with new types of measuring devices and sensors. They thus become intelligent networks (smart grids). Also in the electrical wiring systems of motor vehicles, ships and aircraft, the number of electrical consumers increases sharply; this increases the complexity of these systems. The components of electrical generator, fuel cell or battery, the power distribution and consumers must be technologically matched and controlled together. The students acquire the competences to solve all these tasks in the modules High Voltage Technology, Network Operation and Intelligent Networks, Operating Systems and Computer Networks, Measurement Technology for Intelligent Networks, Power Electronics for Intelligent Networks, Nonlinear Control Systems and Regenerative Energy Systems in Grid Parallel Operation.
